Holidaymakers considering hiring a car on their summer escapes this year are being asked to download a specific code within a tight time frame, as the paper part of the UK driving licence is scrapped.

If you’re looking to hire a car for your summer adventures this year, experts have warned about potential ‘chaos’ being caused after the DVLA have moved to a simplified system, allowing driver details to be stored online, including points on licences – something which is essential for foreign car-hire companies.

Staff at these companies are used to being able to physically check whether a British driver has a valid or clean licence by referring to the paper counterpart, but as of June 8th, holidaymakers have to prove their credentials by login on to the DVLA website and entering their driving licence details. Once complete, drivers are expected to obtain a special code within a tight time frame, which can be given to car-hire companies abroad who can enter the code into their system to see driver details.

This special code only works for 72 hours, meaning that if British travellers intend on hiring different cars during trips lasting longer than three days, they will need to remember to log in whilst abroad and obtain a new code.

Experts have also warned that car-hire companies across Europe are not that aware of the change, and that confusion could hit in the peak of holiday season. Car hire companies could potentially turn away customers if they are unaware of the change and unable to check driver details.

“Following on from the abolition of the tax disc on October 1st 2014, the disappearance of the photo-card driving licence counterpart will mark another important step in the modernisation of the UK’s driving licencing systems. This should make it easier for motorists by dispensing with the need to post off the counterpart to have it updated with new penalty points or a change of name or address.” stated Simon Williams from the RAC.

Review of WorldNomads Travel Insurance

Worldnomads are based in Australia but actually provide cover for people all over the world and pretty much residents of any country.

WorldNomads Products...

Having exceptional medical and cancellation cover for travellers from over 140 countries was a given, we needed more. If you're stuck overseas without cover, we're there. If your plans change on the road, we'll keep you covered.

Major travel agencies like Sunshine Insure, STA Travel and Flight Centre also offer their own plans, though coverage is very limited. While I haven’t used it, many other travel bloggers and writers I know recommend Medjet and IMG. Another really good website is Insure My Trip. It compares policies from a number of providers and a wide range of policies at once. It’s like a global insurance search site! It lots of people have success on their site, and I especially like their high age limit as not enough companies cover seniors!

My favorite insurance provider is World Nomads. I’ve been using them since I first started traveling in 2003 and use no one else. They are very reputable, and claims are quickly and fairly processed. I enjoy World Nomads for a number of reasons: I can purchase and renew my insurance policy online in a matter of minutes, they have a very friendly and responsive staff who answer questions and help solve problems via social media, have great customer feedback, and most importantly, they provide a lot of coverage at a good price. If there’s one company I would recommend, I would say go with them.

MORE ABOUT WORLD NOMADS

World Nomads, recommended by Lonely Planet, is a hugely popular with backpackers worldwide. This is one of the best known travel holidays insurance companies in the world. They market themselves towards independent and adventurous travellers, although, honestly, their insurance is also a good fit for those less inclined to bungee jump.

Review Bottom Line

Huge, reputable, affordable, and with a reputation for being hassle free from the time you get an online quote all the way to their claims process. Though they’re best known for covering younger backpackers,World Nomads provides good coverage for anyone considering a longer trip.

Disadvantages
No coverage for anyone over 60.
There’s not much opportunity to customize the insurance. World Nomads keeps their costs low by offering a single low cost, but high value, product.
World Nomads coverage excludes Cuba.

Advantages
You can buy World Nomads insurance after you’ve started you trip, which is rare in the travel insurance world. In all of our travel insurance reviews, World Nomads is the only company we’ve found that offers this feature for Canadians.
November 2012 update: World Nomads currently cannot provide travel insurance policies to travellers who live in either Quebec or Saskatchewan. Their website says that they’re planning to add service to Saskatchewan and Quebec in the near future.
Good baggage and personal effects insurance that few insurers can match.
A policy is worldwide, including the USA.
You can buy, extend, and claim online, 24 days, 7 days a week.
Available to citizens of 150 countries.

The Basics
Medical travel expense coverage is $5 million per person.
$10,000 of accidental death insurance while travelling as a “ticketed passenger on a licensed common carrier.”
Coverage is world-wide, including USA.
No deductible.
Available to residents from over 150 countries.
World Nomads offers 24 Hour World Wide Emergency Assistance through Travel Guard Canada.

What makes Goodtogoinsurance.com different from other travel insurance?

Danny Palmer, Head of Partnerships at Goodtogoinsurance.com says:
"Goodtogoinsurance.com was specifically created to tackle the lack of choice in the market place for travel insurance over 65 and travel insurance for pre existing medical conditions.
We are proud to be able to provide travel insurance to travellers who have difficulty finding cover from a standard insurer due to their pre existing medical conditions or because they are over 65.
Our travel insurance can cover all types of pre existing medical conditions up to a high level of severity and sometimes even a terminal prognosis. In addition we have no age limits on our travel insurance policies, so you won't find that you are suddenly refused travel insurance cover because you are over 65.
We firmly believe that everyone should be able to travel with the peace of mind that they have the appropriate travel insurance cover in place no matter what their age or medical conditions."
